GreenFire Energy Inc. today announced that Joseph Scherer, CEO, and Alvaro Amaya, Ph.D., Chief Modeling Engineer, will be presenting their recent paper on “Closed-Loop Demonstration Project at Coso Geothermal Field Using Supercritical CO2” at the Stanford Geothermal Workshop, February 10-12, 2020.
GreenFire Energy developed a geothermal power cycle that uses a closed-loop design with different working fluids. An experimental demonstration of this system was performed at the Coso Geothermal Field with supercritical carbon dioxide (sCO2) recirculated in a downhole closed-loop heat exchanger installed into an existing well. In this demonstration, sCO2 was circulated and the well coproduced steam at different flow rates and flow settings. The primary goal of this demonstration was to verify GreenFire Energy’s supercritical CO2 process modeling assumptions and to illustrate the heat and power production potential of closed-loop geothermal technology under various operational conditions.
The Stanford Geothermal Workshop brings together engineers, scientists and managers involved in geothermal reservoir studies and developments to provide a forum for the exchange of ideas on the exploration, development and use of geothermal resources, and to enable prompt and open reporting of progress. Papers are presented on recent research on geothermal reservoirs.
“This research paper is important because it shows the potential for power generation using GreenFire Energy’s closed-loop geothermal technology with supercritical CO2,” said Joseph Scherer, chief executive officer of GreenFire Energy. “We are pleased to be presenting at the Stanford Geothermal Workshop amongst international geothermal experts.”
